For Kumihimo to determine how much you will need you use a 3 to 1 Ratio which mean use your finish necklace/bracelet length and then triple that amount. Remember to add 10cm each side for knotting. So if you are doing a eight-strand 18cm braid bracelet you will need 8 strands of 74cm ( so the formula is (18cm x 3) + 20cm)
